East Manchester are set to entertain current holders Avro in the Manchester Challenge Trophy Final. Both teams, in this fantastic advert for the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Premier League, will clash at the Regional Athletics Stadium in Sports City on the evening of Friday 2nd March.
East Manchester currently sit second place in the BOS Manchester League and are posing a serious threat for the title. They take on fellow title challengers Avro who lay in fourth. They say form goes out the window in cup competitions but it will be hard for these two teams to follow that trend.
East have lost just the once since October in all competitions and will be confident going into the tie. In fact, the treble is still on for the Gorton side after reaching the semi final of the Gilcryst Cup Sponsored by Chadwick & Co. at the weekend, knocking out the holders Royton Town at Wright Robinson.
In last season’s competition, East fell at the second stage to eventual winners, Avro so they will be looking for revenge in their first Challenge Trophy final appearance since the 2002/03 season.
This season, East Manchester have conceded just two goals on their road to the final with both coming in the same game. In the first round, Danny Williams scored a hat-trick to help East ease past Mossley reserves with an emphatic 7-0 home win. He then scored both goals as the Gorton side knocked out Maine Road reserves in the quarter final at Brantingham Road.
East then travelled to Ericstan Park in the semi final to take on last season’s beaten finalists, Wythenshawe Town. They came out 3-2 winners having led 3-0 against 10 men with just 20 minutes remaining. The home side didn’t have enough steam in their tank as East progressed through to their first cup final for 6 years.
East Manchester have netted a total of 75 goals so far this season in all competitions with striker Danny Williams accountable for 19 of them. Jamie Byrne (10) and Paul Smith (9) have also shown good form in front of goal in what has been a successful season for the club to date. East will be confident of continuing their goal scoring form in the final and hope to clinch some much anticipated silverware.
To date. a total of 140 goal have been scored by these two teams alone so it promises to be a game of goals, old fashioned rivalry and most important of all, great football. It’s a must see!
